DR ‹ › The joint committee of the Spanish House of Representatives and Senate for European Affairs approved a non-binding proposal on Monday, presented by the People's Party. The proposal urges the suspension of the trade agreement with Morocco if it results in a 5% shift in agricultural trade prices and volumes. The proposal passed with 18 votes in favor from the People's Party, against two abstentions and 15 votes in opposition, including those from Socialist members. In their proposal, the two chambers of the Spanish parliament called for additional safeguards in the trade agreement with Morocco and firmly rejected any clauses that conflict with the European Union Court of Justice's rulings. The parliamentary committee also advocated for enhanced protection mechanisms in the event of market disruptions, suggesting that the agreement be suspended if disruptions reach a 5% threshold in the volume and prices of agricultural products due to concessions granted to Morocco. Additionally, the proposal calls for reciprocity in agricultural trade and a reassessment of European regulations, especially environmental ones, to improve competitive conditions for Spanish and European farmers. It argues that these rules «burden» their competitiveness «without delivering any environmental benefits». Pere Joan Pons, a Socialist Party senator, defended the European Union's ongoing efforts to finalize trade agreements, emphasizing that the agreement with Morocco already includes provisions to address any market disruptions.
