According to forecasts revealed by the United Nations, Morocco's population is expected to decrease in the coming decades. Meanwhile, its population will be getting older. In a report made public, Monday, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs' Population Division revealed that the world population will continue increasing, but growth rates will vary from one country to another. Similar forecasts were shared about Morocco's population which is expected to decline by 2070, the 2019 edition of the UN's World Population Prospects suggested. Data compiled by the UN body shows that in 2030, Morocco's population will reach 40,887 million and will continue growing for the coming 40 years. In 2070, the Kingdom's population, for both men and women, will increase to 47,761 million. This number will start slowly decreasing, reaching 47,591 million in 2075 and then 47,250 million in 2080. Meanwhile, life expectancy at birth in Morocco will be significantly increasing. The report shows that between 2020 and 2025 will be at 77.43 years. This number will increase to 78.45 in the period between 2025 and 2030. Life expectancy at birth will continue growing and will reach 85.98 between 2075 and 2080. Low fertility levels Contrary to life expectancy, which will be rapidly growing, fertility levels in the Kingdom will fall in the coming decades. Data published by the UN population division expects fertility rates to significantly lower. Between 2020 and 2025 total fertility in Morocco will be at 2.3 births per woman. This figure will move to 1.97 births per woman in the period between 2040 and 2045. Between 2075 and 2080, fertility levels in Morocco will decrease, and will be standing at 1.78 births per woman, according to the UN body's forecasts. The situation of Morocco is similar to global findings, published by the United Nations. The latter indicates that «the world is growing older, as global life expectancy continues to rise and the fertility level continues to fall». The report reveals that by 2050, one in six people in the world will be over the age of 65. «Regions where the share of the population aged 65 years or over is projected to double between 2019 and 2050 include Northern Africa and Western Asia, Central and Southern Asia, Eastern and South-Eastern Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean», the same source found out. Fertility levels, however, will be declining, the UN said, adding that «between 2019 and 2050 populations are projected to decrease by one percent or more in 55 countries or areas, of which 26 may see a reduction of at least 10 percent».
