Moroccan scientist, engineer, and inventor Rachid Yazami has announced that he has been granted a new patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for one of his inventions. The invention is an innovative method that enables the early detection of internal short circuits in batteries, thereby preventing thermal runaways—the main cause of fires or explosions in electric vehicles. This invention allows for real-time analysis of «thermodynamic and kinetic data», in addition to measuring the cell's temperature and internal resistance, to identify early signs and prevent incidents. This technological advancement enhances the safety of batteries used in transportation, aiming to improve the reliability of energy storage systems in vehicles. Announcing the acquisition of his patent, the inventor from Fez expressed his hope that this innovation will help «save lives from one of the most serious risks associated with batteries, particularly in electric vehicles». Professor Rachid Yazami holds over 180 patents in the field of batteries and has made several significant innovations, starting with the co-invention of the graphite anode for lithium-ion batteries, a crucial development for portable energy storage.
