An inmate at the psychiatric and mental health ward of the regional hospital in Beni Mellal has died after sustaining a deep neck wound caused by a sharp object. The tragic incident, which occurred in his room, has sparked widespread concern and conflicting accounts, with some suggesting suicide and others alleging the inmate was attacked by a fellow patient. The Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) in the Beni Mellal-Khénifra region reported that the inmate died by suicide while under the care of the facility, pointing to the incident as a direct result of deteriorating conditions and a lack of proper supervision in the ward. However, the daily newspaper Assabah, citing informed sources, presented a different account. According to this version, the victim was fatally stabbed in the neck by another inmate using a sharp object. Assabah reports that the victim was found in his room lying in a pool of blood. Despite the medical team's swift intervention and an attempt to transfer him to a hospital in Casablanca, the severity of his injuries proved fatal. Judicial police have launched an urgent investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the death and to identify the causes of the security lapse inside the facility. This comes as AMDH continues to raise the alarm over what it describes as overcrowding, negligence, and poor safety conditions. The association condemned what it sees as a serious failure to protect the lives of inmates in the psychiatric hospital, placing responsibility on both the hospital administration and the Ministry of Health. It denounced what it called the «dire state of services» and the lack of adequate safeguards for patients. AMDH also called for a thorough and impartial investigation, urging authorities to clarify responsibilities and promptly release the results of the autopsy.
