In Tangier, the Dar el-Baroud Tower has been officially placed under the supervision of the Directorate of Military History of the Royal Armed Forces. The decision, effective July 1, follows Royal Decree No. 1.99.266 dated May 3, 2000, according to a statement released by the Royal Armed Forces on Monday, July 7. This move is part of the Royal Armed Forces' broader mission to «preserve, promote, and enhance historical sites of military significance». The Directorate of Military History, through its specialized departments, will continue rehabilitation and preservation efforts while respecting the site's original architectural character. The Royal Armed Forces reaffirmed their commitment to «transforming Dar el-Baroud into a cultural space open to the public, contributing to Tangier's historical urban heritage and reinforcing its status as a major cultural and tourist destination in Morocco», the statement noted. Restoration work on the Dar el-Baroud Tower began in 2010, the same year King Mohammed VI launched the project to redevelop Tangier's port area.
