A delegation from the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME) recently visited Torre Pacheco, Spain, to «express its support and listen to the concerns of Moroccan citizens» living there, following a series of xenophobic and racist attacks. On Monday, the institution announced that it had held meetings with the Moroccan Consul in Murcia, Sanaa Merouah; the Spanish government delegate, Maria Dolores Guevara Cava; the Director General of the CEPAIM Foundation for the reception and integration of migrants, Juan Antonio Segura Lucas; as well as representatives from the federation of African associations, community activists, and members of the local Moroccan community. In this context, the CCME strongly condemned «the wave of xenophobic hatred that unjustly targets an entire population». It also denounced «the extremist political rhetoric and disinformation campaigns circulating on social media, which dangerously fuel the stigmatization of the Moroccan community». The Council emphasized that Moroccan nationals in Torre Pacheco «actively contribute to the region's economic development». «Their presence has transformed the city and played a key role in its prosperity. They are a genuine asset to the region», the CCME stated. The Council also stressed that it is «closely monitoring the situation, in coordination with both Moroccan and Spanish authorities». «Respect for human rights and individual dignity is a fundamental value», the institution reiterated, reaffirming its commitment «to defending these principles and taking concrete action alongside the relevant institutions» to recognize the rights and contributions of the community to the region's success. This mobilization comes as civil society organizations have called for calm, condemned the recent racist attacks, and pointed to the role of the far-right in fueling tensions. Last week, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared, «What is happening in Torre Pacheco is a challenge for all of us». He added, «We must speak out, act decisively, and defend the values that unite us. Spain is a country of rights, not of hate».
