In a recent report submitted to the United Nations General Assembly, Secretary-General António Guterres provided an update on the Western Sahara situation, covering the period from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025. This seven-page document, obtained by our editorial team, highlights in paragraph 7 that the region «remained marked by tensions and low-intensity hostilities between Morocco and the Polisario Front». Guterres further detailed that «most of the gunfire reported to MINURSO by the parties was concentrated in the northern part of the territory, near Mahbas». The report states, «At the request of the Royal Moroccan Army and under its escort, the Mission continued to visit locations where gunfire was reported near the Sand Wall and, in most cases, observed traces of exploded artillery shells». It also notes that «most of the gunfire verified by MINURSO landed in remote areas and did not cause significant damage». The Secretary-General specifically mentioned the projectiles launched by the Polisario on November 9, 2024, April 6, 2025, and June 27, 2025. Following the latest incident, «the Special Representative sent separate letters to the Polisario Front to express his deep concern». Alexander Ivanko also urged the Front to «cease hostilities». The Polisario responded by «reaffirming» its «commitment» to «the safety and security of the military observers and Mission personnel», Guterres reported. Notably, one of the projectiles fired on June 27 by the Polisario militias landed near a MINURSO observation post in Es-Smara. The UN Secretary-General also pointed out that «to the east of the Sand Wall, the supply and maintenance constraints previously reported concerning MINURSO have significantly decreased, allowing the Mission to maintain its bases more effectively thanks to regular resupply». Furthermore, MINURSO «was able to deploy a land logistics convoy on average once a month to resupply its bases located east of the Sand Wall». However, this deployment «remained subject to the prior authorization of the Polisario Front on a 'provisional and exceptional' basis», he noted. António Guterres is expected to present a more detailed report on the Sahara situation to the Security Council in early October.
