Weeks after her brutal murder by her ex-partner, the family of 46-year-old Moroccan woman Fatimi Hayat in Foggia, southern Italy, is still waiting to bring her home. Her body remains pending autopsy, delaying repatriation to Morocco. To speed up the process, Giulio De Santis, Foggia's city councilor for Security and Legality, has urged the Public Prosecutor and the director of the Riuniti Polyclinic to authorize the autopsy in a recent letter, local media reported. De Santis stressed that he acted not only in an «institutional capacity», but also as a member of a community deeply shaken by the crime. «Hayat had asked the state for help, but despite this, she was brutally murdered, the victim of a femicide that has shocked the entire community», he said. «Now, the least we can do is ensure her body finds peace and that her family can give her the farewell she deserves». Fatimi was returning from work, on August 7, when she noticed her ex-partner. She immediately alerted the police, but by the time they arrived, she was already lying lifeless on the pavement. She had previously reported the man and was under the protection of the «Red Code», a law that provides expedited procedures in cases of gender-based violence. The autopsy aims to clarify the number of stab wounds she sustained in the fatal attack.
