The personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Western Sahara is gearing up for the Security Council's October deadline. On Friday, September 5, Staffan de Mistura held talks in Washington with Massad Boulos, the Special Advisor to President Donald Trump for Africa. «I reiterated the clear position of the United States: true autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only viable solution for Western Sahara,» wrote Boulos on the platform X. «We also discussed the stabilizing role of MINURSO and pathways to regional peace. I welcome the continued coordination in anticipation of the upcoming discussions at the Security Council,» stated the U.S. President's son-in-law. In late July, Boulos visited Algiers for discussions on the Sahara issue with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf. In the weeks ahead, De Mistura will need to update Security Council members on the latest developments in the Sahara dossier since last April.
