A municipal employee in Alcudia, on the island of Mallorca, has been arrested by the judicial police of the Spanish Civil Guard on suspicion of illegally registering more than 400 Moroccan migrants in the population register, according to the website OK Diario. The investigation began several weeks ago after authorities noticed an unusual rise in new registrations. Mayor Fina Linares (People's Party) then ordered an internal probe, which revealed that the employee, about 45 years old, had been randomly registering Moroccan migrants in the municipal roll. The municipality, governed by a PP-VOX coalition, subsequently referred the case to the Civil Guard, adopting a «zero tolerance» stance and filing an official complaint. Sources close to the case allege that the employee, who worked in the contracting department, received around €1,000 from each migrant in exchange for registering them, granting access to various institutional benefits and assistance. He was arrested on Wednesday morning at municipal headquarters, with investigators having gathered the necessary evidence.
