The United Nations General Assembly has endorsed the «New York Declaration» with a significant majority, securing 142 votes in favor, 10 against, and 12 abstentions. This pivotal document aims to advance the two-state solution, envisioning a future where Palestine and Israel coexist «in peace and security». Morocco joined the majority in supporting the declaration, while Israel and the United States stood in opposition. This decision comes on the heels of a United Nations conference dedicated to the two-state solution, held in New York from July 28 to 30, 2025, notably without the participation of Israel and the United States. On Friday, France, alongside numerous European nations including Germany, and several Arab countries, backed the declaration. However, Iraq and Tunisia were notably absent from the General Assembly session. The vote also coincides with recent remarks by Morocco's foreign minister, reaffirming Rabat's stance on the issue. Speaking at the High-Level Retreat on the Future of Euro-Mediterranean Relations, Nasser Bourita asserted on Thursday that regional peace hinges on a two-state solution between Palestine and Israel. He underscored the necessity of «peace as a strategic solution, paving the way for an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital». He further emphasized, «Without a Palestinian state, lasting peace in the region is unattainable», during a press briefing. The «New York Declaration» articulates a collective commitment «to act together to end the war in Gaza, achieve a just, peaceful, and enduring resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, grounded in the effective implementation of the two-state solution, and to forge a brighter future for Palestinians, Israelis, and all the peoples of the region». The declaration warns that «in the absence of decisive actions supporting the two-state solution and robust international guarantees, the conflict will escalate, and regional peace will remain a distant dream». It further stresses that «to end the war in Gaza, Hamas must relinquish its control over the Gaza Strip and disarm, transferring authority to the Palestinian Authority, with international community support, in pursuit of a sovereign and independent State of Palestine».
