The road linking Amgala to Bir Oum Grine in Mauritania is set to open "within the next two weeks," according to Nizar Baraka, Morocco's Minister of Transport and Secretary-General of the Istiqlal Party. Baraka made this announcement during a political gathering on Saturday, September 20, in Es-Smara, highlighting the significant economic boost this new infrastructure is expected to bring to the city. This statement from the Moroccan minister places pressure on Mauritania, as the country's Ministry of Equipment and Transport has publicly "denied any knowledge of connection projects at the border posts" between Morocco and Mauritania—a denial that has been welcomed by the Polisario. Nevertheless, the Mauritanian Ministry of the Interior and Decentralization confirmed in an official document dated February 11, 2025, the establishment of 82 mandatory border posts for the movement of people and goods across the national territory. This includes the post between Amgala and Bir Oum Grine, which is classified as bilateral and open, in line with existing laws and agreements. In February 2024, Morocco quietly initiated the construction of this road, with the project being managed by the Royal Armed Forces (FAR).
