The personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, made a "technical stopover in Laayoune" on Saturday, September 20, a Moroccan source told Yabiladi. During his brief stay in the provincial capital, de Mistura did not engage in any political meetings. Instead, he had lunch at the airport with the governor of Laayoune before departing for Tindouf, Algeria, the source confirmed. On Sunday, the UN envoy is set to visit the Tindouf camps, where he is scheduled to meet with Polisario leader Brahim Ghali. Unlike his previous visits, this one will be notably short. De Mistura is expected to return to Laayoune tomorrow for another technical stopover before heading to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, the same source added. Staffan de Mistura's current tour began with stops in Washington, Algiers, and Moscow. During these visits, he met with key figures including Massab Boulos, the special advisor to President Donald Trump for Africa, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin.
