The Polisario Front reacted strongly on Friday to the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the UN Security Council, which favors Morocco and extends the mandate of MINURSO for another year, until October 31, 2026. In a statement, the Front denounced what it described as «certain elements» of the text, drafted by the United States, calling them «a dangerous and unprecedented deviation». It claimed these provisions «violate the international status of Western Sahara as a decolonization issue, undermine the foundations of the UN-sponsored peace process, and hinder the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy». Led by Brahim Ghali, the movement asserted that it «will not take part in any political process or negotiations based on proposals that seek to legitimize Morocco's illegal military occupation of Western Sahara or deprive the Sahrawi people of their inalienable, non-negotiable, and imprescriptible right to self-determination and sovereignty over their homeland». The Polisario reaffirmed its determination «to defend its rights and sovereignty by all legitimate means». In paragraph 6 of Resolution 2797, the Security Council emphasizes «the importance of respecting the ceasefire and the need to avoid any actions that could compromise the political process».
