Ahmed Attaf led the Algerian delegation at the African Union-European Union summit in Angola. In a surprising turn, the Foreign Minister chose not to address the Western Sahara issue in his speech, a topic he has consistently highlighted since taking charge of Algerian diplomacy on March 18, 2023. Instead, Attaf used the summit as a stage to express grievances against the three Sahel countries, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, which were notably absent due to their suspension from the pan-African organization following military coups that toppled their civilian governments. The minister declared, «Algeria is sounding the alarm on the resurgence of unconstitutional changes of government in Africa. These changes are no longer mere sporadic reactions to temporary circumstances. They are becoming an entrenched reality, in a context where the prospects for a return to constitutional order remain blocked».
