DR ‹ › More than 9,000 schools out of a total of 12,000 have been rehabilitated between 2022 and 2026, Minister of National Education, Preschool, and Sports Mohamed Saad Berrada announced on Tuesday before the House of Councillors. Responding to an oral question on the rehabilitation of schools in rural areas, the minister said the program covered 4,628 pioneering primary schools and 786 secondary education institutions. He added that once the pioneering schools program is fully completed, all educational establishments nationwide will have been rehabilitated. Regarding satellite schools and access to water, Berrada noted that Morocco's education system includes around 13,000 satellite schools, 4,000 of which were not connected to the water network. The ministry aims to ensure water supply to all of these schools during the current year, or to provide water tanks where network connections are not possible. The minister also reported that between 2022 and 2026, sanitation facilities were built in 3,345 schools, boundary walls were constructed in 2,063 establishments, and accessibility features for children with disabilities were introduced in 5,100 out of 12,000 schools. In addition, 4,851 prefabricated classrooms in satellite schools were replaced, demolished, and rebuilt. On winter preparedness, Berrada said the ministry had set up and activated monitoring units through regional toll-free numbers, strengthened coordination with local authorities and parent-teacher associations, and ensured rapid responses to meteorological alert bulletins. As for heating, he confirmed that 27 provincial directorates out of 82 and 2,814 schools, 2,600 of them in rural areas, have been equipped with heating systems, benefiting around 444,000 students, both girls and boys.
