DR ‹ › At a meeting held on Wednesday, the Steering Committee overseeing Morocco's national health system reform reviewed progress in implementing this strategic project. Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, who chaired the meeting, emphasized the importance of ensuring the effective rollout of the Territorial Health Groups (GSTs) and accelerating major healthcare projects, particularly the construction of University Hospital Centers (CHUs). The meeting focused on preparations to launch the 11 GSTs, whose implementation decrees were approved by the Government Council in December 2025. Participants examined the organizational and institutional measures needed to operationalize the GSTs, in coordination with social partners, and to convene their boards of directors ahead of full implementation. According to an official statement, the GSTs are designed to develop integrated regional medical programs tailored to local needs, expand and diversify healthcare services, and improve patient care pathways, with a direct impact on the quality of services provided to citizens. The committee also reviewed progress in unifying health information systems across the Kingdom, as well as the implementation of an emergency health reform program built around ten flagship projects aimed at delivering short-term improvements and restoring public confidence in state healthcare facilities. On infrastructure, the University Hospital Centers in Laâyoune and Rabat are expected to be completed this year. Meanwhile, ten additional hospital projects, adding 1,430 beds, are scheduled for completion by February 2026, followed by another ten projects providing 1,637 additional beds by the end of 2026. Upgrades to primary healthcare centers have reached an 81% completion rate, with 1,130 centers already rehabilitated and 1,400 expected to be completed by the end of January. A second phase of the program will be launched this year, targeting the renovation of 1,600 additional centers, including 500 scheduled for completion in 2026.
