DR ‹ › This Wednesday, Morocco secured a seat on the African Union's Peace and Security Council (PSC) for the 2026-2028 term. The kingdom's candidacy received overwhelming support, garnering 34 votes during the 48th ordinary session of the AU Executive Council, surpassing the two-thirds majority required. With this election, Morocco joins Algeria on the PSC. Initially, Algiers had attempted to thwart Rabat's entry by encouraging the Polisario Front to submit its own candidacy. However, the Front withdrew from the race last week, urging support for Libya to fill the second seat allocated to the North African group in the PSC. In response to the election outcome, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs remarked, «This vote in favor of Morocco acknowledges the kingdom's initiatives and the approach led by the Sovereign in matters of peace and security. It reflects a comprehensive vision that integrates development, mediation, peacekeeping operations, and the bridging of perspectives.» Since rejoining the AU in 2017, Morocco has been elected to the Peace and Security Council three times. The kingdom is also vying to represent the African group on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 term.
