DR ‹ › Just two days after officially announcing his candidacy for the presidency of the Pan-African Parliament, Algerian politician Fateh Boutebig has made his position on the Sahara issue clear. On Wednesday, April 8, he visited the Tindouf camps, reaffirming his commitment to defending the Polisario's stance within the continental legislative body. In a speech marking the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the «SADR», he called for the «decolonization of Western Sahara», according to media outlets close to the Polisario. A former MP who resigned last March, Boutebig was immediately appointed to Algeria's upper house by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Under the 2020 constitution, as with previous fundamental laws, the head of state has the authority to appoint one-third of the members of the Council of the Nation. Meanwhile, Egypt, Libya, and Zimbabwe have also put forward candidates for the presidency of the Pan-African Parliament. The first round of voting is scheduled for April, with a second round planned if necessary. Since January 2024, Boutebig has served as president of the Future Front, a party that supports President Tebboune.
