DR ‹ › Switzerland said on Friday that it considers Morocco's autonomy plan «the most serious, credible, and pragmatic basis» for resolving the regional dispute over the Sahara. This position was expressed in a joint statement adopted by Ignazio Cassis, Federal Councillor, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, and Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, who is on a working visit to Bern. In the same document, Switzerland welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, noting that «genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute one of the most viable solutions». Switzerland also reaffirmed its support for the central role of the United Nations, as well as for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy. This renewed endorsement of Morocco's autonomy initiative reflects the growing international momentum driven by King Mohammed VI in support of Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara and backing the autonomy plan.
