DR ‹ › The Criminal Chamber at the Tangier Court of Appeal on Thursday sentenced the director of a nursery and a caregiver to two years in prison, following the death of an infant at a childcare facility in the Bir Chifa neighborhood. The court found the defendants guilty of gross negligence, after investigations revealed that the infant fell from the hands of a minor child who had been entrusted with her care, in conditions lacking even basic safety standards. The two women were held accountable for exposing a vulnerable child to danger leading to death, as well as for operating a nursery without legal authorization. Further findings showed that the facility was operating outside the legal framework and in unsafe conditions, prompting the court to impose a stricter sentence in the interest of child protection and deterrence. The incident dates back to October 2025, when responsibility for the infant was assigned to a child no older than eight, a decision described as dangerously reckless. The minor involved was later returned to her father after the court ruled out criminal intent. Meanwhile, prosecutors also charged the two women with failing to report the incident and attempting to conceal its circumstances. The infant's parents had filed a complaint with police in the Beni Makada district after being informed of the child's «suspicious» fall. Initial investigations, supported by surveillance footage, revealed details that contradicted the initial account. Video footage circulating on social media showed the eight-year-old carrying the infant unsafely before repeatedly dropping her, causing severe injuries and internal bleeding that led to her death despite being rushed to hospital. According to the same sources, the minor, a second-grade pupil, attended the nursery as part of a language support program.
