Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations / DR ‹ › UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to meet with his Special Representative for Western Sahara and head of MINURSO, Alexander Ivanko, overnight from Friday to Saturday in New York. The meeting will focus on the strategic review of the UN mission's mandate, ahead of its scheduled presentation to the Security Council on April 30, in line with Resolution 2797. The resolution calls on «the Secretary-General to provide regular briefings, whenever he deems it necessary during the mandate period, and to submit, within six months following the mandate's extension, a strategic review concerning the future of MINURSO, taking into account the outcomes of the negotiations». This meeting comes in the wake of recent briefings to the Security Council, notably by Staffan de Mistura, the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, as well as by the head of MINURSO. It follows a United Nations inspection mission conducted from March 24 to 30 at MINURSO's headquarters in Laayoune, which also included visits to Mauritania and the Tindouf camps. In parallel, France dispatched representatives from its Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Laayoune.
