DR ‹ › Canada is moving closer to Morocco's stance on the Sahara issue. Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated that Canada considers Morocco's autonomy plan as «a serious and credible basis» for resolving the Sahara conflict, following a phone conversation with her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita. In a statement released on Tuesday, Canadian diplomacy emphasized that this position aligns with the pursuit of «a mutually acceptable solution» and a «just and lasting settlement», in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and Security Council resolutions. The head of Canadian diplomacy also expressed her intention to make an official visit to Morocco in the coming weeks to continue discussions, particularly on this issue. The two ministers also discussed bilateral relations between Rabat and Ottawa, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening them through mutual respect, dialogue, and transparency. Notably, the head of Canadian diplomacy also called her Algerian counterpart shortly thereafter, to discuss bilateral relations and regional issues of common interest. As a reminder, the Sahara issue was addressed in early April during a telephone exchange between Anita Anand and Ahmed Attaf.
