In the latest developments of the baby trafficking case, an Italian Review Court has confirmed that the Moroccan couple accused of smuggling a newborn from Morocco to Turin in a shopping bag will remain in custody. The judges cited substantial concerns about the risk of reoffending and potential tampering with evidence as the primary reasons for maintaining their detention. According to the Italian newspaper Corriere Torino, intercepted conversations reveal the couple's criminal intent in human trafficking. «I know what I'm doing. I taught you how to smuggle people illegally», one spouse told the other during a March conversation. The infant, born in August 2024, was transported from Tangier to Italy last October, concealed in a shopping bag and unregistered on the passenger list. Prosecutors Antonella Barbera and Chiara Maina are pursuing immigration charges. Investigation began after the husband reported the situation following a domestic violence complaint from his wife. While he portrayed himself as a disapproving bystander, investigators determined he was professionally dedicated to smuggling foreigners. After arriving in Italy, the couple enlisted two fellow Moroccans to temporarily care for the child until a buyer could be found. According to investigators, the biological mother willingly handed over the baby to be sold in Italy. Police intercepted disturbing conversations where the couple discussed disposing of the child by throwing her from a window or closing her in the oven. They also planned to return her to Morocco hidden in a car to evade consequences. All four suspects were arrested on March 12. The baby was found in good health and placed in social services care while authorities arranged foster placement.
