The Arab League summit, held on Saturday, May 17, in Baghdad, concluded on a positive note for Morocco. Participants expressed their support for the kingdom's bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2028–2029 term, encouraging member states to mobilize all necessary efforts with their partners to back the candidacy. To bring this project to fruition, Morocco will need to secure the support of the 53 African Union member states recognized by the United Nations. This step is essential ahead of the UN General Assembly vote to elect new non-permanent members of the Security Council. It is worth noting that in October 2022, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita announced Morocco's intention to run for a seat on the Security Council for the 2028–2029 term. The bid, presented on behalf of Africa, is expected to be reviewed by the UN General Assembly in the spring of 2027. Morocco has previously served on this executive body of the United Nations on three occasions: in 1963–1964, 1992–1993, and 2012–2013.
