The staff at Algeciras Port Pilots Corporation is thinking about going on strike to push for a new collective bargaining agreement. On Monday, the union said talks between workers and the port fleet department have broken down. This means a general meeting will be held, which could lead to actions like stopping work. According to Campo de Gibraltar Siglo XXI, if the strike happens, it will come at a sensitive time — right during the Strait Crossing Operation (OPE), which officially started on June 15, with local preparations beginning last Friday. A labor inspection is also expected on Tuesday after an anonymous complaint about problems workers raised months ago. The workers are especially unhappy that their contracts last only one year. They want management to fix this and address staff shortages. In support of the fleet service, and even though the radio service staff agreed to a four-year contract, they have decided to refuse overtime, which they are not required to do.
