In the European Parliament, resistance to the newly proposed agricultural agreement between Morocco and the European Union is intensifying. After the intervention by Spanish MEP Isabel Serra Sanchez, German MEP Bernd Lange, a member of the Social Democrats and chair of the International Trade Committee, has voiced his concerns. «The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) made its decision known a year ago, yet the Commission appears either unable or unwilling to address the issue through the proper channels», he remarked on Monday, October 6. As an advocate for the Polisario, Lange argues that the «decision breaches a recently updated framework agreement among European institutions, which was designed to prevent any provisional application without Parliament's consent». Meanwhile, Spanish MEP Vicent Marzà (Greens/EFA), part of the delegation for relations with Maghreb countries (DMAG), criticized the Commission for keeping MEPs «in the dark» and exhibiting an «unprecedented level of opacity». Notably, on January 28, 2025, DMAG members met with a Polisario Front delegation at the European Parliament to discuss the CJEU rulings from October 4, 2024. Last week, Spanish MEP Isabel Serra Sanchez from the Left group submitted a written question to the European Commission concerning the «provisional application of the new EU-Morocco agreement in Western Sahara», which she contends «contradicts the CJEU rulings».
