DR ‹ › The Kingdom of Belgium on Monday reaffirmed its clear and consistent support for Morocco's Autonomy Initiative under Moroccan sovereignty, describing it as «the most adequate, serious, credible, and realistic basis» for achieving a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara. The position was expressed by Belgium's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs and Foreign Trade, Maxime Prévot, following his meeting in Rabat with Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita. Prévot stressed that Belgium's stance is in line with the Joint Declaration signed in Brussels on October 23, 2025, and acknowledged the existential importance of the issue for Morocco, firmly situating the Sahara within the framework of the Kingdom's sovereignty and national unity. The Belgian foreign minister added that he intends to act accordingly at both diplomatic and economic levels, emphasizing that Belgium's position is consistent with international law. He also reiterated that Belgium's ambassador in Rabat will soon be invited to visit the Sahara region to prepare and support several economic initiatives, including visits by Belgian companies and the organization of trade fairs in coordination with the three regional development agencies. Regarding consular matters, Belgium confirmed that its Consulate General in Rabat is competent for the entire territory of the Kingdom of Morocco, without regional distinction, including the Sahara region, for Belgian nationals residing in or traveling to the area. Prévot's visit reflects the positive momentum in Moroccan-Belgian relations, marked by regular political dialogue and a shared commitment to deepening a strategic partnership based on mutual respect and converging interests.
