DR ‹ › On Friday, March 6, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita engaged in a phone conversation with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov. «During this exchange, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov informed his interlocutor about the drone strikes carried out by the Islamic Republic of Iran against the Autonomous Republic of Nakhchivan on March 5, 2026,» stated the Azerbaijani foreign ministry in a statement. The Azerbaijani diplomat emphasized that these actions, targeting his country's territory, not only undermine Azerbaijan's sovereignty but also represent a grave violation of international law, further escalating regional tensions. «Minister Nasser Bourita strongly condemned the drone attacks on Azerbaijani soil, expressing deep concern over these aggressions and affirming Morocco's solidarity with Azerbaijan,» the statement added. During their conversation, both ministers also explored other topics of mutual interest. It is worth noting that in May 2025, the Moroccan government council approved a draft law concerning a military cooperation agreement in defense with Azerbaijan, a nation that recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. This agreement, signed on October 30, 2024, in Marrakech, aims to bolster the strategic partnership, enhance security, and facilitate the exchange of expertise between the two countries. The draft was submitted to the Committee on Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Islamic Affairs, Migration Affairs, and Moroccans Living Abroad in the House of Representatives on December 2, 2025. Despite Azerbaijan being a Shiite-majority country, relations with Iran remain highly strained.
