DR ‹ › The European Commission on Wednesday provided clarifications to Members of the European Parliament regarding products originating from Western Sahara and exported to EU markets. «Most imports concern fish products, both in terms of volume and value,» a senior official told members of the European Parliament's Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development during a presentation. «Out of 200 million tonnes imported, around 130 million come from fishing, notably canned sardines. Agricultural products mainly include tomatoes and melons,» he added. The official also sought to reassure MEPs amid concerns over agricultural imports from Western Sahara. «Some parties have raised concerns about these imports. However, 2022 figures show that 800,000 tonnes of tomatoes were imported from this region, compared to 70 million tonnes from Morocco, representing just 8%,» he stated.
