DR ‹ › The 40th edition of the iconic Marathon des Sables is set to unfold from April 3 to 13, 2026, amidst the stunning backdrop of the Moroccan Sahara. This «legendary ultra-endurance event» is reaching new heights, fueled by «unprecedented international enthusiasm» and record-breaking participation. Since its inception in 1986 with just 23 daring adventurers, the Marathon des Sables has become a cornerstone in the world of ultra-trail running, now attracting over 1,500 participants from 62 nations. The organizers proudly highlight this «unprecedented number, which underscores the growing allure of this extraordinary adventure». Spanning 11 days, with 9 dedicated to full desert immersion, participants will face the challenge of covering nearly 270 kilometers while being self-sufficient in terms of food. This anniversary edition will also debut a 100-kilometer long stage, described as «a powerful symbol to celebrate forty years of achievements and human stories etched in the sand», according to a statement. Joining the ranks of this year's participants are legendary figures of the marathon, including the El Morabity brothers, Rachid and Mohamed, alongside international competitors like Ludovic Pommeret and Ryan Sandes. Among the women, celebrated athletes such as Maryline Nakache, Magdalena Boulet, and Morocco's own Aziza El Amrany will be competing in this edition.
