DR ‹ › Moroccan athlete Othmane El Goumri clinched victory at the 40th edition of the Hamburg Marathon this Sunday, making history as the first Moroccan to win the event. At 33, El Goumri surged ahead about two kilometers from the finish line, securing the win with an impressive time of 2:04:24. He outran Germany's Samuel Fitwi, who finished second with a time of 2:04:45, marking the first time a German has achieved this position since 1999. Kenyan runner Kennedy Kimutai claimed the third spot on the podium with a time of 2:04:56, while fellow Moroccan Mohamed Reda El Aaraby finished sixth, clocking in at 2:05:18. According to the organizers, this year's edition broke participation records, with 46,000 registrations across all events, including 20,000 for the marathon. Of the approximately 16,000 runners who started the race, nearly 15,500 reached the finish line. In the women's category, Kenyan Brillian Jepkorir Kipkoech set a new course record with a time of 2:17:05. Since its inception in 1986, the Haspa Hamburg Marathon, while not as renowned as the marathons in London, Berlin, New York, or Sydney, remains a significant event in Germany and Europe's road racing calendar. The marathon, which takes runners along a scenic route following the Elbe and Alster rivers, draws tens of thousands of participants and numerous spectators each year.
