King Mohammed VI delivered a speech at the Arab League summit held on Saturday in Baghdad. The message was read on his behalf by Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita. In his address, the monarch emphasized the importance of supporting the Palestinian Authority, calling for backing of the institution led by «our brother, His Excellency President Mahmoud Abbas Abou Mazen», to enable it to strengthen its institutions and fulfill the aspirations of the Palestinian people for security, peace, progress, and prosperity. The King also underscored the need to achieve «national reconciliation» among Palestinian factions, noting that this goal «remains key to strengthening the Palestinian position in any future peace process». As a reminder, Morocco hosted a series of political consultations in January 2013 between representatives of Fatah—Mahmoud Abbas's organization—and the Islamist movement Hamas, in an effort to end tensions dating back to 2006. These meetings were closely monitored by King Mohammed VI, who tasked his advisor Abdellatif Menouni with receiving both delegations at the Royal Palace in Rabat.
