Gotion Power Morocco, the local subsidiary of Sino-European EV battery maker Gotion High Tech, will begin construction of its gigafactory in Kenitra «within days», the company's Moroccan head, Khalid Qalam, said on Wednesday. Speaking at an industry conference in Rabat, Qalam said groundwork had already been completed, with initial production expected in the third quarter of 2026. The first phase, valued at $1.3 billion, will provide 20 gigawatts of battery capacity. A second phase will expand capacity to 40 GW, although no timeline has been provided yet. In addition to EV batteries, the factory will manufacture cathodes and anodes, with most of the output destined for European markets. «We have already received orders from many European car manufacturers», Qalam noted. The Kenitra factory stems from a $6.5 billion investment agreement signed with the Moroccan government in June 2023. The plant will be Africa's first gigafactory, aligning with Morocco's strategy to expand and modernize its growing automotive sector.
