Algeria has pledged $1 billion in aid to African countries, an announcement made on Tuesday, July 1, in Seville by Algerian Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui during the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4). His predecessor, Aimene Benabderrahmane, had previously unveiled a similar aid package in February 2023 at an African Union summit in Addis Ababa. «I have decided to allocate one billion dollars to the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development to fund development projects across African countries, as Algeria is convinced that security and stability in Africa are closely tied to development», he declared in a speech delivered on behalf of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. This show of generosity, however, has not stopped several African countries from suspending their recognition of the so-called «SADR», including Ghana. Others on the continent have opted to back Morocco's autonomy plan for Western Sahara, which they describe as «the only credible and realistic solution to resolve the Sahara dispute», as Kenya stated in May. It is worth recalling that Algeria previously contributed $1.5 billion to the BRICS bank. However, this contribution was not enough to secure its bid for membership in the economic and political bloc during the August 2023 summit in Johannesburg.
