The Spanish company Cox has signed an official agreement with Morocco's Ministry of Agriculture to expand the water desalination plant in Agadir. According to the company, the plant's production capacity will increase from 275,000 to 400,000 cubic meters per day. Out of this total, 150,000 cubic meters per day will be allocated to drinking water, while 250,000 cubic meters will be dedicated to agricultural irrigation. This expansion will enable the supply of potable water to two million people and the irrigation of approximately 13,600 hectares of farmland. As part of a sustainable and integrated approach, the company also plans to build a wind farm with a capacity of over 150 megawatts next to the desalination plant, ensuring its energy needs are met. This aligns with the company's «Energy Follows Water» model, highlighting its commitment to environmentally integrated solutions. The project represents an estimated investment of €250 million, to be injected between 2025 and 2027. The expanded desalination plant is expected to become operational between 2026 and 2027, with the wind farm set to launch in 2027. Cox, a specialist in water and energy solutions, stated that the project will enhance water security in one of Morocco's regions most affected by water scarcity, using modern, efficient, and sustainable technologies. Part of the Green Morocco Plan, the initiative aims to diversify and optimize water sources for agricultural use, strengthening the national water system's resilience in the face of climate change and growing pressure on natural resources.
