Staffan de Mistura, the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, is continuing his diplomatic efforts on the Sahara conflict. On Thursday, he met with Massad Boulos, U.S. President Donald Trump's special advisor on African affairs. During the meeting, Boulos reiterated U.S. support for Morocco's 2007 autonomy initiative. In a post on his X account, Boulos wrote: «Glad to build on my previous conversation with UN SecGen's Envoy for Western Sahara, H.E. Staffan de Mistura. This time we discussed the MINURSO renewal. The U.S. is steadfast in its position, that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only basis for a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution for Western Sahara that will bring prosperity, peace, and stability to the region». This declaration comes as de Mistura steps up his consultations with key stakeholders ahead of the UN Security Council's upcoming deliberations on the Sahara. His recent diplomatic tour has included stops in Washington, Algiers, Moscow, and Tindouf. In New York, he also met Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita on Wednesday and his Algerian counterpart, Ahmed Attaf, on Thursday. Article modified on : 26/09/2025 16h37
