Just a week after the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2797 on October 31, the debate over the Sahara issue is being reignited in Spain's lower house of Parliament, fueled by Polisario supporters. On Friday, November 7, members from the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG), the Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), and the Basque independents of EH Bildu called for the appearance of Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares before the House of Representatives. They are pressing the Spanish government to clarify its stance on the Sahara issue, as reported by an Iberian media outlet. These groups are urging Pedro Sánchez's government to unequivocally support the mandate of MINURSO and the organization of a self-determination referendum. On October 31, the Security Council also called on the UN Secretary-General to deliver a strategic review on MINURSO's future within six months, considering the outcome of negotiations. The request for José Manuel Albares's appearance is likely to gain backing from Sumar, a member of the left-wing government coalition. The People's Party, representing the traditional right, might also lend its support. Since March 2022, the PP has consistently endorsed all non-binding proposals in both Houses of Parliament, criticizing Pedro Sánchez's support for Morocco's autonomy plan for the Sahara.
