Spanish local authorities continue to demonstrate notable generosity towards the Polisario Front. The municipal council of Gran Canaria has decided to allocate a budget of 850,000 euros to the Front for 2026. These funds are officially earmarked for the «Sahrawi refugees in the Tindouf camps," a local media outlet reported on Friday. This funding will notably support a new edition of the «Holidays in Peace" program. In contrast, the council has only granted 25,000 euros to Venezuelans and a mere 1,000 euros to Ukrainians. This week, a group of MPs from the Popular Party, currently in opposition, questioned Pedro Sanchez's government. They are demanding a report to be presented to the International Development Cooperation Commission, detailing the use of funds and the results achieved in humanitarian aid for Sahrawi refugees for the period 2021-2025. In 2024, the Spanish government dedicated over 12 million euros to humanitarian aid for the Tindouf camps, marking a significant increase from the previous year, as highlighted by Iberian media close to the Front at the end of August. For the record, the Spanish executive had granted 7 million euros in humanitarian aid in 2023, and 3.6 million euros in 2022. These funds are channeled to the Polisario via the Sahrawi Red Crescent, which is responsible for receiving, collecting, and distributing all international aid. Despite these increased funds, the UN continues to sound the alarm about the nutritional situation in the Tindouf camps. A survey published in June revealed «an alarming deterioration in nutritional status, especially among children and women». Preliminary results indicate that the Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rate has reached 13.6%, its highest level since 2010.
