This Tuesday, Algeria's Foreign Minister reiterated his country's position on the Sahara issue. «The Western Sahara dossier is not closed and remains under the jurisdiction of the United Nations, whether at the General Assembly, the Security Council, or the Special Committee on Decolonization (C-24)», he told the press. «The resolution adopted by the Security Council has preserved all the fundamental principles for a solution to Western Sahara, without altering any of its interdependent and complementary elements.» Ahmed Attaf even went as far as to commend «the major achievements» of Resolution 2797, which was passed on October 31 without Algeria's involvement. He claimed it would enable the Polisario Front to uphold its stance on a firm basis grounded in international law. However, this optimism is not echoed in the Tindouf camps, as evidenced by a meeting held yesterday by opponents of Brahim Ghali. This latest statement from Algeria's top diplomat aligns with the interview he gave on November 2 to an official Algerian media outlet. In that interview, he expressed satisfaction in having, according to him, thwarted what he described as Morocco's plan to end the mandate of MINURSO and undermine the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.
