DR ‹ › Cameroon football legend François Omam-Biyik says this edition of the Africa Cup of Nations holds special meaning for him. Currently being staged in Morocco, it marks the second time the country hosts the continental competition, one that Omam-Biyik not only took part in back in 1988, but also won on Moroccan soil with the Indomitable Lions. «In 1988, I was part of the Cameroon national team that won the AFCON in Morocco», he told CAFOnline on Tuesday. At the time, however, Omam-Biyik was unable to continue playing alongside his fellow Cameroonian teammates after suffering an early injury against Egypt, forcing him to watch the remainder of the tournament from the stands. Despite that setback, he recalls a squad defined by unity and mental strength, particularly during the tense semi-final against hosts Morocco, where «solidarity and talent» proved decisive. On AFCON 2025, Omam-Biyik believes Morocco is well positioned to deliver a high-level tournament, praising the country's experience in hosting major sporting events and the strong presence of Europe-based African players. While warning that the competition remains unpredictable, he openly names the hosts as favourites: «For me, the favourite from the start is Morocco… But winning the Africa Cup of Nations is always very difficult». The former striker, who later served as an assistant coach for the Cameroonian national team, hopes the tournament will ultimately be remembered for its atmosphere and the quality of football on display.
