DR ‹ › The French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) announced that, based on astronomical calculations, the conjunction of the new moon marking the beginning of Shawwal 1447 AH will occur on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 01:23 (UTC). Given the favorable conditions for sighting the lunar crescent, the council confirmed that Eid al-Fitr 1447 AH will be celebrated on Friday, March 20, 2026. This year, the end-of-Ramadan charity (Zakat al-Fitr) has been set at 9 euros per person. Determined according to religious guidelines, this amount takes into account both the financial capacity of donors and the needs of recipients. However, interpretations vary, with estimates generally ranging between 7 and 12 euros, and individuals are encouraged to follow the recommendation of their chosen religious authority. Zakat al-Fitr is intended for people in need and should ideally be distributed within the local community, although it may be sent elsewhere if necessary. While it is traditionally given at the end of Ramadan, it may also be distributed starting from the first day of the holy month. Those who are permanently unable to fast due to chronic illness or old age may instead give a compensatory charity known as Fidya. According to prevailing religious opinions, the amount for each missed day of fasting may correspond to the equivalent of Zakat al-Fitr (7 to 12 euros), half of that amount (3.5 to 6 euros), or a quarter (2 to 3 euros). The CFCM advises individuals to follow the religious guidance that best suits their circumstances. The collection and distribution of Zakat al-Fitr and Fidya can be handled by charitable organizations. However, these donations are strictly intended for the poor and must not be used to fund mosque operations. To ensure transparency, mosques that collect operational funds are encouraged to clearly inform donors and maintain separate accounts.
