DR ‹ › The Republic of Honduras has decided to suspend its recognition of the self-proclaimed «Sahrawi Republic», established in 1976. The decision was conveyed by Honduran Foreign Minister Mireia Aguiro de Corrales to her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, in an official letter received on Wednesday. In her correspondence, Aguiro de Corrales stressed that the move reflects a «sovereign decision by Honduras», rooted in the country's longstanding commitment to the principles of non-interference and respect for the internal affairs of states. Honduras also reaffirmed its «full support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to reach a just and lasting political solution», as well as for UN Security Council resolutions, notably Resolution 2797. The decision has also been communicated to UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Honduras, which first recognized the «Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic» in 1989 and reaffirmed that position in 2022, now joins a growing list of countries reversing or suspending recognition. This marks the sixth such decision in two years and the second this year in South America, following Bolivia's move last February. The development comes months after the election of President Nasry Asfura, 67, of the National Party of Honduras (PNH), who is considered close to former U.S. President Donald Trump.
