The Republic of Guatemala reaffirmed on Thursday that Morocco's 2007 autonomy initiative represents «the only serious, credible, and realistic basis» for advancing toward a lasting solution to the Sahara conflict, in full respect of the Kingdom's territorial integrity and national sovereignty. This stance was expressed by Guatemala's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carlos Ramiro Martínez Alvarado, during a press briefing following his meeting in Rabat with Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita. The Guatemalan diplomat also reiterated his country's full support for Morocco's efforts to achieve a political, realistic, pragmatic, and sustainable resolution to this regional dispute, one that is mutually acceptable to all parties. Both Morocco and Guatemala underscored their shared commitment to upholding the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. Notably, Guatemala was the first Latin American country to open a general consulate in the city of Dakhla, in December 2022.
