The match marked the official opening of the Dutch football season. Moroccan internationals Ismail Saibari and Souhayb Driouech both featured in PSV's triumph. Saibari played the full 90 minutes as a starter, demonstrating his established position under coach Peter Bosz. Go Ahead Eagles took the lead through Matias Suarez in the 35th minute, but PSV responded with an own goal from Gerrit Nauber in the 78th minute.
