Friends and family of Sion Assidon, the national coordinator of the BDS Morocco movement (boycott, divestment, and sanctions), say they are deeply concerned about his health following his emergency hospitalization on August 11, after he was found unconscious at home. In a statement released Tuesday, they described the 77-year-old activist as enduring «the most challenging moments of his life». «On August 13, Sion was transferred from a clinic in Mohammedia to another facility in Casablanca [following brain surgery, ed.], where he remains in intensive care in a critical, comatose state», his close circle said in a declaration sent to Yabiladi. «We are watching his condition closely, caught between hope and fear, after doctors informed us that he is battling a lung infection linked to the cerebral hemorrhage that caused his coma», they added. According to the same source, «despite some slight signs of improvement, the situation remains critical and complex». To protect him from further complications, the medical team has recommended against visits. «Only one family member is authorized to communicate with the medical and administrative staff», they stressed. Alongside the health concerns, Assidon's relatives are urging a thorough legal investigation into the circumstances of the incident. Following correspondence on August 15 and a public statement from the prosecutor's office on August 19, a new letter was sent on August 22 to the presidency of the public prosecutor's office, requesting greater efforts to uncover the truth, particularly through forensic examination. The investigation, currently underway, is being carried out by the judicial police under the supervision of the prosecutor's office. Authorities intervened at Assidon's home after two of his employees reported on August 11 that he had not shown up for work and could not be reached.
