Stellantis Morocco announced on Tuesday the introduction of Leapmotor, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, to the Moroccan automotive market. Founded in 2015 by entrepreneur Jiangming Zhu, the company has established itself as a major player in China's electric vehicle sector, it said in a press release. Leapmotor has sold over 600,000 electric vehicles in China and targets 500,000 annual sales by 2025. The company operates through a strategic joint venture with Stellantis, leveraging the group's distribution network and quality standards for international expansion beyond Chinese borders. The brand's key technology is REEV (Range-Extended Electric Vehicle), which uses a combustion engine solely to recharge the battery rather than drive the wheels. This system maintains 100% electric driving while addressing range anxiety concerns among potential electric vehicle buyers in Morocco. Moroccan consumers will first encounter Leapmotor at Auto Expo 2025, running from September 18-28 in Casablanca's Anfa-Park district. Leapmotor vehicles will be distributed through Sopriam, Stellantis Morocco's established retail network, with plans for gradual market consolidation.
