A new twist has emerged in Mali's complaint against Algeria before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The transitional government in Bamako announced on Thursday that «the ICJ informed it, on September 19, 2025, of Algeria's refusal to accept the Court's jurisdiction in the dispute related to the destruction, by Algerian Defense Forces, of a reconnaissance drone belonging to the Malian Armed and Security Forces during a surveillance mission on Malian national territory, on the night of March 31 to April 1, 2025». «This refusal by the Algerian junta ends the proceedings before this international jurisdiction», the Malian government lamented. «The Algerian junta should have submitted to the International Court of Justice. This refusal not only demonstrates the junta's rejection of international justice but also its disdain for international legality. The refusal to cooperate with the ICJ is further evidence of Algeria's support for armed terrorist groups and reinforces the Malian government's argument regarding the destruction of its drone», the statement continued. Last week, Algeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs had already announced that «Algeria will notify, in due course, the International Court of Justice of its refusal of this procedural maneuvering», according to a statement from Algerian diplomacy.
