The UN Secretary-General has submitted his latest report on developments in Western Sahara, covering the period from October 2024 to September 2025, to the members of the Security Council. The document notes that the reclamation of territory east of the Sand Wall began earlier this year, with the United Nations' approval. In paragraph 45, Antonio Guterres reveals that the Royal Armed Forces (FAR) have undertaken activities east of the barrier. «On March 10 and May 8, 2025, the FAR requested authorization from MINURSO at the observation points of Oum Draiga and Mahbas to construct 92 and 54 shelters, respectively, for their personnel», the Secretary-General wrote. «These requests were approved by MINURSO», he confirmed. Notably, the report raises no concerns regarding the road linking Amgala in Morocco to Bir Oum Grine in Mauritania. Guterres simply recounts the facts, noting that the FAR assured MINURSO the 93-kilometer route was intended for civilian use. Similarly, in 2022, the UN did not object to the opening of the El Guerguerate crossing between Morocco and Mauritania. However, before November 13, 2020, Guterres had repeatedly called on the Polisario Front to end its blockade of the passage. The group's decision to resume hostilities, effectively ending the 1991 ceasefire, ultimately backfired.
