The special advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump on African affairs engaged in discussions yesterday regarding the Sahara issue with Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League. «We addressed the region's most urgent challenges and reiterated our mutual commitment to peace and stability. I underscored that the Moroccan autonomy plan remains the sole foundation for a fair and enduring resolution to the Western Sahara conflict», stated Massad Boulos on the X platform. Historically, the Sahara issue has been absent from the Arab League's agenda. For decades, Morocco and Algeria had an understanding to keep this conflict out of the pan-Arab organization's discussions. However, in 2021, Algeria disrupted this agreement by attempting to introduce the Sahara issue at the November 2022 Arab summit in Algiers. «The upcoming Arab summit will be characterized by inter-Arab solidarity and support for the Palestinian cause and the Sahrawi people», declared former Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra at the time. This initiative was largely rejected by the majority of Arab states. Following the meeting between Massad Boulos and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune met with the Egyptian Foreign Minister on Wednesday, November 5, who delivered a message from President Abdelfatah Al-Sissi.
